What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough quality tears to keep them properly lubricated. This can lead to discomfort, inflammation, and vision issues. Your tear film is made up of 3 layers:

  • The oily outer layer
  • The watery middle layer
  • The inner mucus layer

Dry eye is often linked to tear layer issues and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), where the oil glands in your eyelids become blocked, preventing proper tear production.

Common Symptoms of Dry Eye

Dry eye can come with different symptoms, including:

  • Stinging or scratchy sensation
  • Redness and irritation
  • Watery eyes (a response to dryness)
  • Blurry or fluctuating vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • A feeling of something in your eye

Our team works with you during your dry eye screening to get to the bottom of your symptoms and find the right treatment option.

What Causes Dry Eye?

A variety of factors can contribute to dry eye, including:

  • Aging: Tear production naturally decreases with age
  • Digital eye strain: Reduced blinking while using screens can lead to dryness
  • Environmental conditions: Wind, air conditioning, and dry climates can worsen symptoms
  • Contact lens wear: Prolonged wear can reduce tear film stability
  • Certain medications: Antihistamines, antidepressants, and birth control can reduce tear production
  • Autoimmune disorders: Conditions like Sjögren’s syndrome can affect tear glands

Our Dry Eye Diagnostics

We use comprehensive testing to assess your tear film quality and determine the best course of action for treatment. Our diagnostic methods include:

  • Dyes/staining: Helps identify damaged areas of the eye
  • Schirmer’s test: Measures tear production levels
  • Subjective tear break-up time (TBUT): Evaluates how quickly tears evaporate
  • Dilation: Allows for a deeper examination of the overall health of your eyes

In-Office Therapies

For long-term relief, we offer targeted treatments to address the root cause of dry eye. These modern therapies can help restore tear quality and improve comfort.

  • Meibomian gland expression: Clears blocked glands to improve tear quality
  • Eyelid debridement: Removes debris that may be affecting oil gland function
  • Punctal plugs: Tiny inserts that help retain moisture by blocking tear drainage

At-Home Treatments & Products

Managing dry eye doesn’t stop at the clinic—our recommended at-home solutions can support and extend the benefits of in-office treatments for lasting relief.

  • Medicated eye drops: Prescription drops can help increase natural tear production
  • Eye masks and eyelid sprays: Soothing treatments to ease irritation and improve hydration
  • Omega-3 supplements: Supports healthy tear production and reduces inflammation
