All that time can add up to significant eye strain. Digital eye strain, sometimes referred to as computer vision syndrome, can be disruptive and keep you from enjoying the things you love to do, as well as the things you need to do.

What can be done? Our doctors can recommend ways to mitigate your symptoms so you can keep your eyes feeling comfortable throughout the day.

What is Digital Eye Strain?

Digital eye strain results from spending a lot of time focused on close-up work. it can cause your eyes to blink less often, disrupting tear production and distribution, leading to tired or dry eyes.

Digital eye strain can cause symptoms like:

  • Soreness
  • Dryness
  • Headaches
  • Light sensitivity
  • Difficulty focusing
  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Overly watery or teary eyes

All of these symptoms can worsen if you have poor lighting in your work environment or if your screen brightness is too high.

Other eye conditions like uncorrected myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia, can also play a part in causing eye strain.

What Can My Optometrist Do to Help?

As with any eye issue, the first step it to speak to your optometrist. Our trained eye care professionals are here to help determine the source of your eye strain and suggest treatments and strategies for long-lasting relief.

Recommend strategies to alleviate symptoms could include:

  • Using artificial tears: Artificial tears can lubricate the surface of your eye to help keep them comfortable.
  • Adjusting your workplace ergonomics: How you sit at your desk can also cause digital eye strain. Adjust your seat so that your feet can rest comfortably on the floor, keep your monitor about an arm’s length away, slightly down from your line of sight. Keep all stationery and papers at a comfortable distance when working, to help minimize eye strain.
  • Follow the 20/20/20 Rule: This is a common exercise you can perform to help prevent eye strain. Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something about 20 feet away. This allows your eyes to relax and re-adjust so you can get back to the task at hand.
  • Using blue light glasses: Blue light generated by computer and mobile screens can be a cause of digital eye strain. Our doctors may recommend specialized computer glasses of blue light filtering lenses.
