What Is an Eye Emergency?
Eye emergencies can occur unexpectedly, but understanding what to look for and how to respond can help minimize damage, prevent further injury, and allow for prompt treatment to preserve vision. Below are some of the most common eye emergencies you may encounter:
- A foreign object in your eye
- Sudden vision loss
- Trauma to your eye
- Sudden pain in or around your eye
- Sudden flashes and floaters
- Sudden distortion of vision

We Are Here for Your Eye Care Needs
Although a broken pair of glasses might not qualify as an emergency, we’re happy to help you with any non-urgent eyewear needs.
We also have a limited selection of loaner glasses available while your pair is being repaired or replaced. Remember, keeping a spare pair of glasses is always a good idea to avoid eyewear-related emergencies.

First Aid for Eye Emergencies
If you’re dealing with an eye emergency, it’s important to stay calm and follow these first aid steps until you can get to our office or the emergency room:
- Chemical exposure: Rinse your eyes immediately with cool, clean water for 15–20 minutes. If exposure is severe, go to the emergency room.
- Blunt trauma: Apply a cold compress gently to the affected area to reduce swelling and pain.
- Punctures, tears, or scratches: Do not touch the eye. Cover it with an eye shield or sterile dressing, and get immediate medical attention.
