When Should Kids Have Their First Eye Exam?

When it comes to your child’s health, eye care is often overlooked, but it plays a major role in their learning, development, and day-to-day life. Vision problems can affect a child’s ability to read, play, socialize, and concentrate in school. That’s why it’s important to be proactive with early eye exams.

At Clarity Optometry & Vision Care, we’re proud to support Guelph’s young families with affordable, accessible, and compassionate care. Whether your child is just learning to walk or navigating their first years in school, we’re here to help make sure their eyes are healthy and their vision is clear.

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that children receive their first comprehensive eye exam between 6 and 9 months of age. While this may sound early, it’s the perfect time to catch developmental issues before they interfere with learning or quality of life.

Kids Eye Exams: What You Should Know

Understanding when to schedule eye exams and what to expect can help you feel more confident as a parent. Here’s a breakdown of the key age milestones for children’s eye care.

Babies (6–9 Months)

Your baby’s first eye exam is a big step in their early healthcare journey. At this stage, we check how your baby’s eyes focus, track movement, and work together. We also look for any early signs of structural concerns or eye conditions that may require monitoring.

A baby’s vision develops rapidly in the first year, so early detection of concerns like congenital cataracts, strabismus, or amblyopia can make a big difference.

Toddlers (2–5 Years)

As your child grows, their vision becomes more connected to their ability to learn and interact with the world. Between the ages of 2 and 5, we assess how well their eyes coordinate and how clearly they can see at different distances. These exams also check for depth perception and focus problems that might not be obvious at home.

This is also a great time to start building positive associations with the eye doctor. At Clarity Optometry, our friendly team takes extra care to help your child feel safe and relaxed during their visit.

School-Age Kids (6+ Years)

Once your child enters school, yearly eye exams are recommended. Why? Because even minor vision problems can have a big impact on academic performance. Children may not always realize or be able to communicate when they can’t see clearly. They may just think that blurry vision is normal.

Common signs your child may need an eye exam include:

  • Squinting or covering one eye to see
  • Chronic headaches
  • Difficulty reading or focusing
  • Sitting too close to screens
  • Poor hand-eye coordination

Regular checkups help us monitor changes and adjust treatment as needed. Whether it’s managing myopia with glasses or addressing digital eye strain from screen time, we’re here to help.

What Happens During a Children’s Eye Exam?

We tailor each exam to your child’s age, comfort level, and developmental stage. You can expect the visit to be smooth, informative, and even fun!

Here’s what typically happens during a children’s eye exam:

Initial Discussion

We’ll start by chatting with you about your child’s health history, daily habits, and any vision-related concerns you’ve noticed. This helps us understand what to look for during the exam and build a personalized care plan.

Visual Acuity Tests

Depending on your child’s age, we may ask them to identify shapes, pictures, or letters from a chart. These tests measure how well your child sees at various distances, and they help identify signs of myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), or astigmatism.

Eye Coordination & Focusing

We assess how well your child’s eyes work together, and how quickly and accurately they can shift focus from one object to another. These skills are essential for reading, playing sports, and participating in the classroom.

Eye Health Evaluation

Using specialized equipment, we’ll examine the internal and external health of your child’s eyes. This includes checking for early signs of conditions like:

  • Amblyopia (lazy eye)—where one eye doesn’t develop proper vision.
  • Strabismus (crossed eyes)—where the eyes are misaligned.
  • Refractive errors—which affect how light is focused inside the eye.

Common Childhood Eye Conditions

Amblyopia (Lazy Eye)

Amblyopia occurs when one eye is weaker than the other. If untreated, it can lead to long-term vision loss. Early treatment, often involving eye patches, glasses, or vision therapy, can significantly improve outcomes. However, early intervention is essential to reduce irreversible vision loss.

Strabismus (Crossed Eyes)

Strabismus causes the eyes to look in different directions. Kids with this condition may develop double vision or rely heavily on one eye. Treatment may include glasses, exercises, or even referral for specialized care if needed. Once again, early intervention is essential to reduce irreversible vision loss

Refractive Errors

Refractive errors affect the way light enters the eye. Myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism are all common in children and can usually be managed with prescription glasses. If your child struggles to see clearly, we can recommend a solution tailored to their needs.

Tips to Prepare Your Child for Their First Eye Exam

Even if it’s their first visit, kids often do better than expected at the optometrist! Here’s how you can help them feel comfortable:

  • Talk about it ahead of time. Let them know they’ll look at pictures and lights and that the doctor will help them see clearly.
  • Bring a comfort item. A favourite toy or blanket can help ease anxiety.
  • Pick a good time. Avoid booking during nap time or right before a meal when your child might be cranky or distracted.
